South Africa to use developmental side at COSAFA Cup

South Africa national team coach Stuart Baxter will select a developmental side for the COSAFA Cup tournament set for Durban later this month.

Baxter confirmed the news on Thursday that there will be two separate Bafana Bafana squads – one for COSAFA and the other for AFCON.

Indications were that the coach could use the regional tournament as a preparatory platform for the Afcon finals, but that will not happen due to what he described as a tight schedule.

The COSAFA selection will include new faces and a few experienced players. Baxter will take charge of the first game and leave the rest to his assistant Molefi Ntseki.

He said: “The first squad will consist of young players to give them an opportunity and players who have played before to give them a chance to throw their hat in the ring for a place at the AFCON tournament.”

The AFCON squad will play one international friendly at home before leaving for a comprehensive and longer camp in Dubai where some of the players from COSAFA will join the AFCON team.
