Ajax skipper De Ligt off to England or Spain: Edwin Van der Sar

Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar has confirmed that captain Matthijs de Ligt will move to Spain or England this summer.

De Ligt, 19, has been linked with a move to Barcelona and Manchester United with his team-mate Frenkie de Jong already agreed to join the Camp Nou side at the end of the season for an initial fee of £65m.

“Frenkie de Jong is already a Barcelona footballer, while De Ligt I think will go to England or Spain,” Van der Sar told Sky Sports.

“I think the players also want to win something. Perhaps for the two of them, it can be the last chance to win something special with our club.

“Matthijs has been here for 12 years, we hope it will be a great ending for him.”

De Ligt featured and scored in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Tottenham which saw their European journey coming to an end.
