Billiat’s move to Chiefs – Good for the pocket but bad for development

Kaizer Chiefs’ defeat to a lower league side TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday came as a shock to many who had predicted a stroll for Amakhosi.

The loss perhaps sums up the team’s disappointing season, but for many Zimbabwean football fans, the performance of the star man, Khama, might be a more relevant topic than the club’s woes.

Billiat’s move from Tswane side Mamelodi Sundowns took many by surprise, with several people believing the player was on his way to Europe.

The 28-year-old is one of those that will bear the hopes the nation at the 2019 Afcon, so his development is of paramount importance to not only the fans but also for Sunday Chidzambwa and his technical team.

Looking at Kaizer Chiefs’ gradual decline over the years, it’s wishful thinking for anyone to believe Khama will develop further. In fact, he is nowhere near the player he was at Sundowns.

Of course, he has shown moments of brilliance occasionally, but those are just but signs of a remarkable player at a wrong football club.

No disrespect intended, but the ACES Youth Academy graduate is just way too good for the current Kaizer Chiefs side.

With all that talent, it’s quite astonishing that he does not even have a shot at CAF Champions League football, where players of the same quality as his rub shoulders.

With AFCON 2019 around the corner, Warriors fans will be praying that their star’s confidence is up to scratch after a disappointing campaign across Limpopo, where, in all honesty, benefits his pocket more than development.
