CAF bans referee who officiated Champions League final played last week

CAF has slapped Egyptian referee Gehad Grisha with a six-month ban following his poor performance in the Champions League final.

Grisha took charge of the first leg encounter of the final played over the weekend between Wydad Casablanca and Espérance de Tunis, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Morocco.

The 43-year-old referee produced four yellow cards in the first half and denied Wydad a goal before not awarding the hosts a penalty in the 57th minute after consulting the VAR.

The Moroccan giants also finished the game with a man short after midfielder Brahim Nakach received two yellow cards inside space of five minutes.

This led Wydad to lodge a complaint to CAF against Grisha and CAF has found guilty of making poor refereeing decisions during the game.

The football body has confirmed the suspension in a statement on their website which reads:

Following the first of leg of the Total Champions League final match played on 24th may 2019 between Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) and Esperance de Tunis, the referees’ committee of the Confederation Africain de Football has decided to suspend Mr. Gehad Grisha for a period of six (06) months due to poor performance.
