Warriors finish third at Cosafa

Zimbabwe have finished third at the 2019 Cosafa Cup after beating Lesotho 5-4 on penalties on Friday night.

The match had ended in a 2-2 stalemate and was decided by the shootout. The Rahman Gumbo-coached side was missing many of their leading players, who had flown out for a friendly international against Nigeria in Lagos on Thursday.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the 13th minute through Zambia-based striker Tafadzwa Rusike, connecting Rodwell Chinyengetere’s cross. Lesotho restored parity on minute 33 courtesy of Jane Thaba- Ntso’s effort to go to the break 1-1.

A brilliant solo run by Leeroy Mavunga on the hour saw Zimbabwe getting into the lead for the second time in the game, but the advantage, however, shortlived as Tshwarelo Bereng equalised through a deflected shot seven minutes later.

The game finished in a deadlock with no further changes on the scoresheet.

Talbert Shumba, who had come on as second-half substitute managed to save one penalty while Rusike, Ronald Pfumbidzai, Tafadzwa Kutinyu, Rodwell Chinyengetere and Denis Dauda all converted their kicks as Zimbabwe won 5-4.

Warriors XI: E. Chipezeze (T. Shumba 63′), R. Hachiro, R. Pfumbidzai, L. Mavunga, T. Kutinyu, B. Ncube, D. Dauda, L. Mhlanga, B. Madzokere, R. Chinyengetere, T. Rusike.

Substitutes: T. Kamusoko, T. Shumba, A. Muskwe.
