2021 Afcon Qualifiers Draw: Pots, Procedure and Zimbabwe’s potential opponents

The 2021 AFCON qualifiers draw will be made today in Cairo, Egypt.

The pots for the draw were revealed on Tuesday and Zimbabwe are in Pot 3.

The format is similar to the one used in the last campaign and will see the teams drawn into twelve groups [Group A to L – each with four teams] with the top two teams in each pool at the end of the qualifying round progressing to the final tournament that will be hosted in 2021 by Cameroon.

The seeding is based on the latest Fifa Rankings released on June 14.

This means the Warriors who are ranked number 26 are facing a possibility of meeting DRC again, having played each other in the 2019 Afcon qualifiers and at the finals in Egypt. Cosafa teams such as South Africa and Zambia are also potential opponents for Zimbabwe.

Here are all five drawing pots as announced by Caf:

Pot 1:Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria, Morocco, Congo DR, Ghana, Cameroon (hosts), Egypt, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ivory Coast, Algeria

Pot 2:Guinea,South Africa, Cape Verde, Uganda, Zambia, Benin, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Mauritania, Niger, Kenya, Libya

Pot 3:Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Central African Republic, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Malawi, Togo, Sudan, Tanzania.

Pot 4:Burundi, Rwanda, Equatorial Guinea, eSwatini, Lesotho, Botswana, Comoros, Ethiopia plus four preliminary-round winners.

Pot 5:Liberia, Mauritius, Gambia, South Sudan, Chad, Sao Tome e Principe, Seychelles, Djibouti.

Note: Teams in Pot 5 will face each other in a preliminary qualification round, with the four winners being added onto Pot 4.
