Official: CAF declares Esperance as CAF CL winners, hit both finalists with fines

The Confederation of African Football has officially declared Esperance as the African Champions League winners after the football body’s disciplinary committee found opponents Wydad Casablanca guilty of abandoning the final.

The decision comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overruled an earlier judgement by CAF executive committee that ordered a replay of the second leg, in which the Moroccan side refused to finish after a VAR controversy.

Esperance were 2-1 up on aggregate in the return match when Wydad left the pitch.

The latest ruling by CAF has also seen both clubs receiving fines.

Wydad got a $20 000 fine for abandoning the match and a further $15 000 for the use of flares by supporters while Esperance were hit with a $50 000 fine for crowd trouble.

The Tunisians will now play in the Club World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.
