Akbay facing serious charges following incident involving female referee

Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Erol Akbay is facing serious charges from the PSL following an incident that happened in their 2-0 loss to Chicken Inn on Wednesday.

The Dutchman received a red card in the 88th minute of the game for throwing a water bottle at a female assistant referee, Sanelisiwe Sibanda.

Akbay was reacting in protest over the Gamecocks’ second goal which was scored by Obriel Chirinda. The coach believes Sibanda failed to rule the striker offside during the build-up to the goal.

In his post-match interview, Akbay said it was an accident, and his expulsion was a right call.

He said: “The water bottle flew out of my hand, I did not intend to throw the bottle. It was an accident from my side. I cannot complain about my red card because it was the right call.”

Akbay’s sending off comes two weeks after two of his players were red-carded in their match against Triangle FC.
