Warriors W.C qualifier now in major doubt following Gvt’s response to Zifa

The government is reluctant to sponsor the national team to fulfil its 2022 World Cup qualifier against Somalia in Djibouti on Thursday.

The development casts further doubt on the Warriors’ game after Zifa’s accounts were frozen last week following a garnishee order secured by a former employee who is seeking to recover the money he is owed.

According to Minister of Sport Kirsty Coventry, the association has approached the government, asking for money to send the players to Djibouti.

But local football body’s efforts to get a relief have hit a wall after Coventry told them to restructure first before they could ask for money.

The local-based players are scheduled to fly out today and will link up with the foreign-based contingent in Djibouti.

Posting on Twitter on Tuesday, Coventry said: “Government took on Zimbabwe Cricket’s debt but was told not to interfere. ZIFA once again ask for more money, but we are told not to interfere.

“This is taxpayers money you are ‘playing’ with. Both these associations get huge amounts of money from their international federations – where is it?

“Asking for money alone is not asking for help. You need help in restructuring everything from the ground and I have been willing and ready (from the beginning) to work with CAF and FIFA, and any other organization to make Zimbabwe a Sporting Powerhouse.”

Zifa and SRC, a government arm, have been on the warpath and the latter even went as far as asking FIFA to dissolve the entire local football board and replace it with a normalisation committee.
