FIFA orders Cardiff to pay Nantes first installment of Sala transfer fee

World football governing body FIFA have ordered English Championship side Cardiff City to pay Nantes the £5.3 million first installment fee for the late Emiliano Sala.

The Argentine striker died in January in a plane crash while travelling from France to Wales to complete his move to the Welsh club.

Cardiff had previously argued that the striker was not yet their player when he died hence they were not liable to pay the fee, something which FIFA denied.

Nantes released a statement on their website welcoming the decision reached by the world’s football governing body.

“We welcome this decision by Fifa. Cardiff must respect its commitments and the rules of sports law.

“Beyond the human tragedy that affected the entire sports community with the death of Emiliano Sala, Fifa has just reminded that the legal security of the commitments made by clubs in the context of player transfers must be respected.

“It is not a surprise, it confirms the position that FC Nantes has held for the last nine months: Emiliano Sala signed with Cardiff; his contract with Nantes was over; the international transfer contract (ITC), delivered by Fifa, states that on the day of the accident Emiliano was indeed a Cardiff player.” read the statement.
