Bad news for local fans as SuperSport announce termination of CAF TV rights

Giant sports content provider SuperSport, have announced that they will not be broadcasting any CAF content following the sudden termination of television rights between the African football governing body and an agency called Lagardere Sports.

SuperSport themselves had obtained the television rights through the French agency Lagardere and the disagreement between CAF and the agency means they (SuperSport) suffer the consequences and viewers from across Africa will be swipped of the opportunity to watch their national teams in action in the AFCON 2021 qualifiers, U-23 AFCON qualfiers and CAF Champions League.

The statement issued by SuperSport today announcing the development read: “Due to the termination by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of its agency agreement with Lagardere, SuperSport will not be broadcasting CAF content, commencing with the Afcon under-23 championship, starting in Egypt this weekend, until further notice. This also extends to the Afcon qualifiers, which resume on Wednesday, 13 November.

“We are in a difficult position where we cannot broadcast the CAF games when we don’t have a firm contractual arrangement in place. SuperSport had previously acquired these broadcast rights from Lagardere,” commented Joe Heshu, MultiChoice Group Executive for Corporate Affairs.”

Should the matter not be resolved in time, local fans will not be able to watch the senior men’s national soccer team, the Warriors’ AFCON qualfiers against Botswana and Zambia, as well as FC Platinum in the CAF Champions League.
