Nakamba turned down Warriors captaincy

Warriors team-manager Wellington Mpandare has revealed that Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba was once offered an opportunity to be the national team captain but turned down the offer.

Mpandare made the revelations during a discussion on ZTN‘s football show The Couch on Wednesday.

The manager said: “He is not comfortable wearing that thing at all. He was offered at one time and said no.”

The Warriors captaincy was left vacant after the arm-band was taken from Knowledge Musona following the player strikes which marred the team’s campaign at the 2019 Afcon. The 29-year-old was believed to have been among the senior players that masterminded the revolt.

He was left out in the World Cup qualifier against Somalia in September with interim coach Joey Antipas picking Alec Mudimu to lead the team.

Zifa dismissed the reports of any ban on Musona, and the Belgium-based striker was recalled to the team for the upcoming Afcon Qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia.

It now remains unknown if he will take back the arm-band or Antipas will give it to Mudimu again.
