CAPS United claim bragging rights in Harare Derby to end Dynamos unbeaten run

CAPS United claimed the bragging rights over Dynamos in the Harare Derby played at the National Sports on Sunday.

Newman Sianchali scored a first-half goal which saw the Green Machine taking a giant step towards the Premiership title.

The hosts put an early pressure and created a couple of opportunities in the opening moments of the game but failed to record any on target.

Joel Ngodzo had his shot went wide in the 4th minute before Newman Sianchali followed up with a header which missed the target. Phineas Bamusi also had his moments from the left flank.

The Glamour Boys, on the other end, played deep and relied much on long balls to counter-attack which never amounted to anything. The visitors, however, started coming out of their shell after the quarter-hour mark, and retained possession in the midfield, but again they struggled to finish their moves.

Sianchali broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when he headed home Valentine Musarurwa’s cross.

Dynamos tried to respond with Nigel Katawa’s effort a few moments later, but Mateyaunga denied him as CAPS United went to the break leading.

The hosts started the second half on high and forced a double save out of Simbarashe Chinani in the 52nd minute. Substitute Blessing Sarupinda made a brilliant solo run and failed to beat the keeper 1-v-1. Bamusi picked up the loose ball but his follow-up shot was punched away.

Dembare’s only threatening chance after the interval came in the 67th minute when Mateyaunga spilt Katema’s shot but quickly recovered to stop Edward Sadomba’s rebound.

Goalmouth action became few and far in between for the remainder of the game as it ended 1-0 in favour of CAPS United.

The result saw Dynamos’ 19-match unbeaten run coming to an end.

Elsewhere, FC Platinum kept the momentum at the top with a 1-0 edge over Chapungu while Prince Dube scored in the 10th minute as Highlanders beat Manica Diamonds 1-0 at Barbourfield Stadium.

Caps United 1-0 Dynamos
Hwange 2-3 Herentals
Triangle United 3-0 ZPC Kariba
