TP Mazembe to build 50 000-capacity stadium

Congolese giants TP Mazembe have unveiled plans to build a 50 000-capacity stadium in Lubumbashi next year.

Club president Moise Katumbi confirmed the news to BBC Sport on Thursday. He said the construction of the new stadium is part of the Lubumbashi-based side’s on-going 80th-anniversary celebrations.

“We got a loan sometime back to construct a stadium but its capacity is only 22,000 meaning that the majority of our fans can only watch our matches on television,” he told the BBC.

“But we want to build a brand new one next year. The capacity will be 50,000.”

Meanwhile, Fifa boss Gianni Infantino and Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Ahmad Ahmad are in DRC attending the celebrations, and they have visited the site of the new stadium.
