Gerrard criticised for Nakamba substitution

Aston Villa coach Steven Gerrard has been criticised for the change he made in the second of his side’s 2-3 loss to Manchester City, which resulted in Pep Guardiola’s side winning the 2021/22 Premier League title.

With the Claret and Blue leading 2-0 at the Etihad, Gerrard replaced Brazilian ace Phil Coutinho with Zimbabwean midfielder Marvelous Nakamba in the 71st minute.

Critics saw that change as the watershed moment of the game, which City came back from behind to win and lift the title.

They took to microblogging site Twitter to condemn the substitution.

  1. Nakamba is a good player in the mildfield defensely. It was unfortunate the all the backline succumbed to Vity pressure.Dont blame Gerrard and Nakamba ,what fid the other players do to stop the attacks

  2. Nakamba is a good defensive midfielder , otherwise Gerrard was not suppose to replace cotinho with nakamba because you can’t play defensive football against Mancity a team with a strong front

    1. If u are a soccer fan u cant say that liverpool supporters are the only 1 blaming gerrad coz that match actually show gerrad did blind substitution why he substututed coutinho .
