French club Marseille are repotedely investigating what triggered Patrice Evra to lash out at a fan before the club’s Europa League fixture.

Evra was sent off after kicking one of his own team’s fans in the head before Marseille’s Europa League defeat at Vitoria Guimaraes. The ex-Manchester United defender aimed an acrobatic kick at a supporter at the side of the pitch during the warm-up. Marseille supporters had been jeering Evra for about half an hour while the players prepared for the game.

The incident evoked memories of another French-man Eric Cantona’s infamous “kung-fu kick” during Manchester United’s game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in January 1995.
