Liverpool have booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League as Group E winners courtesy of a ruthless 7-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow at Anfield this evening.

Philippe Coutinho helped himself to a first career hat-trick as the Reds set a new goalscoring landmark for English clubs in the Champions League, recording their second 7-0 win of the group stages.

Three of the goals came inside the opening 20 minutes, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane (2) and Mohamed Salah also on the scoresheet during a virtuoso display from the home side’s attacking unit.

Manchester City fell to a 2-1 loss away to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League to see their unbeaten run end at 28 matches.

The Citizens, previously without defeat in 227 days since going down 2-1 to Arsenal in last season’s FA Cup semi-finals, were two behind inside 32 minutes in Kharkiv and unable to truly recover until Sergio Aguero converted from the penalty spot in added time. However top spot in Group F had already been guaranteed.

Lucas Vazquez scored the winner as Real Madrid recorded a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in their final Champions League group game on Wednesday night.

Tottenham Hotspur recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory over APOEL at Wembley Stadium.

Fernando Llorente and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou both netted their first goals for Spurs – either side of a fine strike from Son Heung-min – to ensure that the North London outfit come through the group stages with five wins and a draw from six matches.

While Spurs progress as group winners, APOEL finish bottom and miss out on a place in the Europa League to Borussia Dortmund, despite the German outfit losing to Real Madrid.
