COSAFA U-20 Wrap: S.A, Uganda book semi final spots

South Africa and Uganda booked their semi final places in the 2017 COSAFA Under-20 Championships on Monday.

Amajita beat Egypt 2-1 to finish on top of Group B while Uganda who are participating at the tournament as a guest nation secured their semi final berth after a 1-1 against Malawi.

Egypt controlled possession in the first half and Mohamed Karem fired the Young Pharaohs ahead after 18 minutes of play.

South Africa stepped up their tempo in the second half and managed to level terms moments after restart when Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s deflected shot beat the goalkeeper. Luvuyo Mkatshana put the game to bed when he scored the second goal for South Africa in the 70th minute.

Egypt tried to come back in the closing stages But Amajita kept their cool to finish the group stages with nine points.

The North Africans still have a chance to reach the knockout stages as best runners up if results in Group C matches favour them.

In another Group B match in the same afternoon,  Mozambique beat Mauritius 2-0 courtesy of goals from Kamo-Kamo Cumbane and Domingos Junior.

Meanwhile, Uganda came from behind to draw 1-1 with Malawi in a Group A encounter.

The victory put them on top of second placed Malawi due to a better goal-difference.

Francisco Madinga put the Young Flames ahead with 20 minutes left on the clock but Uganda equalised ten minutes later through Stephen Mukwala.

Hosts, Zambia claimed their first victory of the tournament in a 2-0 win against Swaziland to finish third in Group A. Francisco Mwepu scored both goals in the second half.

The group stages will round up on Tuesday as Lesotho take on Angola at 3pm while Zimbabwe tackle Namibia at the same time at the Nkana Stadium.
