Football fans are not impressed with the appointment of Sunday ‘Mhofu’ Chidzambwa as the substantive coach of the national team.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) announced on Wednesday that Chidzambwa signed a one-year performance-based contract. The appointment comes after ZPC Kariba revealed that they will not renew his contract.

Mhofu is the first coach to lead Zimbabwe to the Afcon finals in Tunisia in 2004 and he has won the COSAFA Castle Cup a record three times, with the latest coming in 2017.

Football fans voiced their outrage at the decision by ZIFA saying they should have appointed someone with “modern football tactics”. Soccer24 has been following some of the fans’ reaction to the development and here is what they said:

Wiseman Mtandwa: Recycled like in politics mhofu is not tactical we need someone with fresh ideas with mhofu we a doomed the only achievement will be to qualify for nations cups and exit in the first round.

Sylvester Nyamande: Mhofu is a Zifa high-performance committee member which recommended the sacking of Kallisto Pasuwa, now he got his dream, how is he going to review his performance & possibly recommend himself? With all the respect Mr Chidzambwa dai vasiyana nebasa iri,he played his part very well & i think its time to protect his legacy unlike kuzodzigwa zvozonyadzisa. Ma tactics ake ava ekare akasara bhora ravakuda fresh ideas plus mukuru wacho haade criticism.

Archduke Dickson Kaiser Katsaruware: Potential crap is indeed put again in front of our eyes cry my beloved zim football…. Once a failure will always be pain on your a***) …we can’t blame mhofu but l guess his legacy has come to the very end…how on earth did he agree to be humiliated to such an extent…. Shame chidzambwa shame…..soon yo fame will fade.

Rocboycliff Chimuti: I think zifa just went for cheap man . That mhofu was once a good coach during his time . His tactics are now old fashioned. We shld have gone for a young coach. Mhofu I don’t see him as a good coach fo zim . To b honest we are going to miss next Afcon finals.

Prince Rolland Moyo-Phakathi: I wish i could leave this country for good….old horse….old tactics….no continuity again…..mara for the why kodwa?

Other fans wanted FC Platinum coach, Norman Mapeza to get the job.

Simbarashe Canady: The day ZDF will descent on ZIFA leadership, criminals there will be purged. Give NORMAN MAPEZA his post. We continue singing Mdara Achauya for Mapeza as well. Next time book warriors different venue for camping kana musina mari for that ngavarare kudzimba dzavo than involving church venues which restrict other participants. Stop it. Forthwith.

Clive Muvezwa: Although he’s experienced he lacks new tactics of Morden football he’s too proud of himself that he doesn’t attend refresher courses , soccer is changing everyday guys to my opinion Mapeza was the right man for the job.

Andie Pa Bingura: Norman anotaura chokwadi saka vasingamude ndosaka vachimusvipa but our national team needs him.

However, a few people believe Chidzambwa was the best option and will deliver good results.

Lovemore Dzovani: The BEST Move. Now the r talking. Kwete mastudent coaches avanga varikuedza.

Chrispen Bonde: It’s good to have you mhofu.. hope you going to deliver what us Zimbabwean football fans zvatinenzara nazvo .. Go mhofu make us Win and win and take Afcon and to qualify for World cup in your tenure … we have trust in you as you one delivery something better.. you are the best coach in zim history if I’m not mistaken.

Abraham Nyon: Mapeza team yake inonakidza but doesn’t win games. Mhofu boring but ichihwina. Remember from onset in 2004 he wasn’t fired but quit after his assistant was fired. So I would want to see him with Rahman once again.

Meanwhile, Sunday Chidzambwa’s first assignment as substantive coach will be on the 23rd of December in a friendly match against Zambia.
