SuperSport United have reportedly sold their Betway Premiership franchise to Bloemfontein Celtic.
According to South African journalist and sports commentator Robert Marawa, Bloemfontein Celtic will re-enter the Premiership under a new name, Celtic United.
Marawa posted on social media: “Bloemfontein Celtic’ is back in the Premiership for next season, with the Marawa Scorpions unravelling that the status of Supersport United has been bought by a young Bloemfontein businessman for an amount of R50 Million Rand. The Club will operate as Celtic United.”
This development leaves the future of Zimbabwean players Nokutenda Mangezi and Onismor Bhasera uncertain.
Mangezi’s one-year contract with SuperSport United expired on June 30 after joining the club last year from Real Betis Academy Zimbabwe.
SuperSport hold an option to renew his contract for another year, but with new management set to take over, it remains unclear whether they will retain the Zimbabwean youngster.
Long-serving defender Onismor Bhasera was recently appointed as an assistant coach. His future is also uncertain, as the new management may opt to make changes to SuperSport United’s technical team, especially since Celtic already has a coaching staff in place.
Striker Terrence Dzvukamanja, who played for SuperSport United last season, is set to depart the club and join local side Scottland FC.
Should the franchise sale be approved by the South African Premier Soccer League, it will mark the end of an era for several Zimbabwean players, including Simba Nhivi, Washington Arubi, Evans Rusike, and the late George Chigova, who have all represented SuperSport United.
