South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that the nation will appeal FIFA’s decision to hand midfielder Themba Zwane a three-match suspension following his red card against Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Zwane was sent off during the closing stages of Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat in their opening Group A fixture after an incident involving Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado. While a straight red card usually carries a one-match suspension, FIFA’s disciplinary committee extended the punishment to three matches.
The ruling means the experienced midfielder is currently set to miss South Africa’s remaining group-stage matches unless the appeal is successful.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s clash against Czechia, Broos expressed his frustration with the sanction, insisting he felt the punishment was excessive.
“Yes, we will appeal,” Broos said.
“I think it was severe, I don’t think it was a red card. There was not even a VAR review and you can see the Mexican player blocking Themba. He tried to get over him by putting his arm over his shoulder and that’s all he did.
“He didn’t hit him with the elbow. You get a red card for that and then a three-match suspension. I am sorry because this is severe.”
The Belgian coach also questioned the consistency of disciplinary decisions, referencing an incident involving Argentina captain Lionel Messi during his side’s victory over Algeria.
“I don’t want Messi to get a red card because a player like that has to be on the pitch. We all saw what a wonderful player he is.
“But what is the difference here? I am a bit frustrated because Themba got a three-match suspension.”
FIFA confirmed that the decision remains subject to appeal, giving South Africa hope that Zwane’s ban could yet be reduced before the end of the group stage.
