Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho has taken on a new off-field role with Italian Serie C side Ravenna after agreeing to join the club in a marketing and promotional capacity.
The 46-year-old, who retired from professional football several years ago, will not be making a playing comeback despite initial speculation surrounding his move, according to talkSPORT radio.
Instead, Ravenna have confirmed that the former Barcelona and AC Milan star will help raise the club’s international profile and support its commercial growth through marketing initiatives and special events.
Speaking after the agreement was announced, Ronaldinho expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter with the ambitious Italian outfit.
“New colours, same smile. I can’t wait to get back to dancing on the ball and write a new story together with Ignazio and the entire Cipriani family,” he said.
“Football has always been a source of joy for me, and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna.”
Club owner Ignazio Cipriani described Ronaldinho’s arrival as a major milestone, revealing that the Brazilian icon had long been one of his football idols.
He also clarified that the Ballon d’Or winner will not feature for the team in Serie C next season, with his responsibilities centred on promotional and commercial activities rather than on-field duties.
Ronaldinho enjoyed a glittering playing career, winning the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Brazil, the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona and the 2005 Ballon d’Or before ending his professional career following a spell with Fluminense in 2015.
