Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Anfield as part of new head coach Andoni Iraola’s backroom staff.
Reports in recent weeks claimed Thiago was keen to reunite with Liverpool in a coaching capacity after leaving his role with Barcelona at the end of last season. However, the 35-year-old has now explained why such a move is not currently possible.
Speaking during an interview with Rio Ferdinand, as cited by TalkSPORT, Thiago was asked whether he had been interested in the Liverpool coaching opportunity.
He replied: “No man, I don’t have the badges. I don’t have enough to be a coach.”
The required UEFA coaching qualifications – UEFA Pro License or UEFA A License – are needed to secure any permanent senior backroom role in the UK.
The former Spain international retired from professional football in 2024 after his Liverpool contract expired. He subsequently gained coaching experience under former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick at Barcelona, but his lack of the necessary coaching licences currently prevents him from joining Liverpool’s staff.
Liverpool recently appointed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach, with the Spaniard already bringing members of his trusted coaching team to Anfield, including former Bournemouth coach Tommy Elphick.
