Chiyangwa’s hopes of pushing the elections to 2020 suffer a huge blow

ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa’s hopes of completing a full four-year term suffered a blow after a proposal by the Central Region Soccer League to have the polls in the next six months was backed by 46 of the 58 councillors who were in attendance.

Chiyangwa was elected into office on December 5 of 2015, following the removal of Cuthbert Dube. Through the association’s lawyer, Itai Ndudzo, the 59-year-old and his administration had pushed the ZIFA elections to 2020.

But this was not agreed by the majority of the councillors at the AGM held yesterday.

A new electoral committee was put in place yesterday and, this could see the election season starting in a fortnight with the Area Zone elections that will culminate in the board elections on June 30. The committee was appointed according to Article 25 of ZIFA constitution and article 6 of the electoral code.

The committee, however, will only get down to business after FIFA approved.
