Batshuayi racially abused by Atalanta fans

Borussia Dortmund striker Michy Batshuayi says he was subject to racist chants from Atalanta fans during a Europa League game in Italy.

The Belgium international, on loan from Chelsea, tweeted:

“002018 2018 and still racists monkey noises in the stan … really ?! hope you have fun watching the rest of @EuropaLeague on TV while we are through #SayNoToRacism #GoWatchBlackPanther
12:04 AM – Feb 23, 2018 @mbatshuayi”

Dortmund advanced to the round of 16 by drawing 1-1 to beat Atalanta 4-3 on aggregate on Thursday.

The game was played at Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia because Atalanta’s home stadium is unsuitable for UEFA games.

There have been several incidents of racism at Serie A matches this season.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia (h/t Football Italia ), Atalanta President Antonio Percassi said he was sorry if Batshuayi was the target of invective from the stands.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t hear them,” he said. “If they did happen, then I am very sad and absolutely apologise to Batshuayi. This should never happen.”

Racism has been an ongoing issue in Italian football, with a number of high-profile incidents occurring throughout the course of the campaign.
