Chigova’s heroic saves sends Warriors into the semis

George Chigova was the hero of the day when he saved three shots, helping Zimbabwe beat Botswana 3-1 on penalties to book a semi-final berth.

The game ended 1-1 at full-time. Evans Rusike sent the Warriors into the lead on 39th minute following a beautiful set-up by Khama Billiat.

Billiat had a glorious chance early in the game, but his shot was saved by the keeper.

The Zebras pressed for an equaliser and could have scored on the stroke of half-time, but Makgantai’s volley from a close range was saved by Chigova.

Nonetheless, the striker levelled terms on the hour with a header, capitalising on a poor defending by the Warriors.

Captain Ovidy Karuru had to be replaced after picking up a knock on his ankle towards the midway point of the second period.

Zimbabwe then survived a scare in the last quarter hour of the encounter when Kevin Moyo gave away the ball only for Orebonye to send his effort over from an unmissable point.

The match was forced into penalties after it finished 1-1.

Brian Amidu, Jameson Mukombwe and Billiat all converted their kicks and Chigova made three saves to dump Botswana out of the 2018 COSAFA Cup.
