Chapungu coach Rodwell Dhlakama was delighted after knocking FC Platinum out in the first round of the Chibuku Super Cup for the second successive year.
Waru Waru won the match 5-4 on penalties after the game had ended 2-2 in regulation time. Osborne Mukuradare and Edmore Muzanenhamo scored Chapungu’s two goals while Kelvin Moyo and Mkhokheli Dube were on target for the hosts.
In the shootouts, the visitors converted all their five kicks through Tapiwa Kumbuyani, Xolani Ncube, Blessed Mbavarira, Muzanenhamo and Phillip Marufu. FC Platinum’s Farai Madhananga was the only one to miss as Rodwell Chinyengetere, William Stima, Moyo and Never Tigere hit the target.
Speaking after the match, Dhlakama who was sent to the stands in the 37th minute for throwing a second ball onto the field of play said history repeated itself on Saturday.
“As I told you, history has a tendency of repeating itself, and it did today. We won, and I hope we will continue to do well in the tournament and in the league as well,” he said.
“There are a number of tough fixtures for us, but with this kind of performance, I think we will proceed to the next stage.”
The Airforce side joins Dynamos, Herentals, Harare City and Nichrut who have already reached the quarterfinals.
