Warriors nominated for CAF award

Zimbabwe National team has been nominated for the Men’ National Team of the Year award at the 2018 CAF Awards.

The Warriors are one of the six nominees announced who include Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritania and Uganda.

Zimbabwe, under coach Sunday Chidzambwa, managed to retain momentum after some poor performance in their first international games of 2018. They took part in a four-nation tournament held in Zambia in March where they failed to win a match, loosing on penalties to Zambia and Angola.

They played another friendly against Botswana in the following month to celebrate the Independence Day but the tie which they lost 1-0 was not sanctioned by FIFA.

In June, the Warriors successfully defended the COSAFA Cup after beating Zambia 4-2 in the final.

They went on to maintain their unbeaten run in 2019 Afcon Qualifiers, drawing 1-1 against Congo then beat DRC away before playing to a 1-1 stalemate in the reverse fixture.

However, they suffered their first defeat in the campaign at the hands of Liberia this month in game which could have seen them booking the ticket to Cameroon. Nonetheless, they remain on top of Group G of the qualifiers.

The awards ceremony will be held on January 8, 2019 in Senegal.
